SAS NOURSE THE LEGEND BACK AT DHS.

A hard covered, stitched book with articles from many Old Boys, Colleagues and multiple photographs of this legend that rekindles past memories and relationships with SAS and the ‘Old Red Brick Building’ that was our D H S. One immediately visualises the rugged image of SAS moving about ‘Dear Old Durban High’ all those years ago. There was so much more to SAS than saving a friend from the jaws of a shark in 1940 (many newspaper facsimiles relating exactly what played out on that beach at Warnerdoone, are included). How to destroy grandma’s Parker pen – projected missiles flying out of open windows in the guise of books, cases, the odd shoe and Gamsy’s kit bag swallowed up in a 44 gallon drum of white-wash lurking in anticipation under the window. (Mr Theobald was fastidious about clean white cricket gear!)

The books have been donated to School by Clive Shedlock. The proceeds will be passed over to Blackmore House. This generosity may seem bizarre as he is not an Old Boy. He is, however, one who sought education in a missionary school in the sparsely populated outskirts of Durban, yes, in the village of Westville.
Why then has Clive stepped forward to support Blackmore House?
The New Blackmore House opened in the latter part of 1969. Mr D G Nourse was appointed Superintendent and the minor snags associated with a new building were sorted out by the end of that year.
This year, 2020, Blackmore House and indeed School celebrate 125 years since the establishment of D H S here on the Berea. However, 1970 was a very special year for SAS and Pam Nourse. Their daughter, Ann married Clive Shedlock and their wedding reception was held in the Blackmore House dinningroom, 50 years ago!
Hence the gift, in memory of SAS and Pam and the 50 year anniversary.
